I’m writing!

Wait a second before you give me an award for stating the obvious – I’m not referring to my blog!

The last few months have seen some fun writing assignments come my way which I thought I’d share with you all because, well, I’m kinda proud of myself actually! As you may recall, I was laid off in January so it’s been wonderful to have the time to take on these projects. I am kick-starting my job search again next month and I’m hoping to find an occupation that will utilize my writing skills. So it’s also been great to build up some credentials that I can add to my resume. On that note, if anyone out there needs assistance with putting together website content or other copy, then please do let me know.

In December I was incredibly honoured to have a blog post of mine republished by The Thinking Person’s Guide to Autism. Around the same time I also started writing app reviews for Smart Apps for Kids. I have always thought very highly of Ron’s reviews so being the first person aside from him to write a review for his site was a huge confidence boost for me. I was then contacted by Just Kids Apps to ask for assistance with writing app descriptions for their new website. To date I have written descriptions for Bobik, all three Heidi apps and Motlies Easter Island Adventure and I am currently working on the Advent Calendar app. It’s been a great opportunity to write about apps from the perspective of the developer rather than the buyer.

My latest assignment wasn’t related to either autism or apps and consequently was a real change of pace. The folks at Cheapflights asked me if I would write an Insider’s Guide to Toronto for their website, a request I jumped at. It was great to be writing something travel-related again, even if it was only about my home  city.

Now, don’t get carried away thinking my life is solely full of writing-related glamour. It’s also been busy with, amongst other things, toilet training, dental visits, planning the boys’ transition to Grade One in the fall and lots and lots of juggling related to monetary matters. I think a long-term plan has been sketched out but the devil, as they say, is in the details.

The other activity that has been taking up quite some time is working out how I will transition to working from just an iPad. My laptop was employer-provided but after I was laid off I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a netbook for some time. However, I need to return the netbook to it’s owner shortly, so I will be soon be doing all my writing from an iPad. I have done quite a bit of research into how to accomplish this in the least painful way possible and I’ll share my discoveries here.
